"I did warn you."
"I know I know, that your answers wouldn't give me what I needed."
I sighed, trying desperately to come to terms with everything, but doing so was unsettling my stomach.
"Even the small amount of information you possess is not enough to justify and fully allow you to comprehend what you witnessed. So do not attempt to do so."
She took my right hand in hers.
"Instead be grateful that you are alive and well, for the most part. And try not question what you have learned."
Breathing deeply, I managed to calm down, even if only for a little while. And with my mind at ease, something clicked.
"Gas. Gas was used in that final fire... Wasn't it?"
"what makes you think that?"
"The hissing sound, I heard it before, every time I light a stove."
She let go of my hand and once again crossed them over her lap.
"You are correct. But those details are unimportant, when compared to the cause for which it was used."
I closed my hands into fists and made an effort to remain calm.
"You keep saying that they died for a good and important cause... do you not see that it doesn't matter? A human life was lost, sacrificed, burned alive. Just the mere thought of it is inconceivable let alone its execution."
"You misunderstand me... I never said the sacrifice was good or important, I just said it was necessary."
"FOR WHAT??"
I was standing and screaming when I asked the question, yet no one else even looked at me.
She responded in her calm tone.
"For you to complete your journey and for me to complete my pilgrimage. But there are more necessities."
I conceded defeat and sat back down, realising this was the most I could get out of her concerning the sacrifice.
