When I arrived at work that morning, I went straight to my friend's office, to know the details of my imminent promotion, but he was nowhere to be found. I thought that he might have overslept, but as the hour approached noon, I started to get worried. So I tried giving him a call during lunch and spent three minutes talking to the answering machine. He was sick, so I said I'd visit him and wished for him to get better.
I spent the rest of the workday disappointed, but new my promotion was waiting for me tomorrow.
About half an hour before I left, the director called me to his office, which I promptly responded to. As I entered, he offered me a seat. That was the extent of small talk we exchanged.
He asked me if I knew what had happened to my friend. confused, I told him what I heard from the machine, that he was sick.
The director just looked at me for a minute. Then he asked me if I had had any job offers from other companies, to which I quickly replied no. Again the one minute stare.
Before I could ask about what was happening, he started talking, explaining what really going on.
Turns out, my friend wasn't sick, he had left the country because of a job offer. And this situation created a problem. Due to my long stay in the company, I had to change jobs,  company policy. And there had been courses to upgrade and certify my skills over the last few months, which explained the constant commotion of my fellow workers. But I had missed these courses. But even if I had attended the courses, I still couldn't be promoted to my friends job, because we were close, and there were no other job openings.
The director looked at the floor. "Unfortunately this only allows me to give you two choices...", he said slowly.
Number one was to be demoted to a very low paid job. Number two was to no longer work for them.
We stayed in silence for what seemed an eternity, until I noticed he was waiting for an answer.
"Thank you for your offer, but I quit."
I got up and quickly left the premises.
