Light flooded the car, and for a few moments all I could see was white. Blinking, I slowly started regaining my sight. Blurry shapes, then colours, until everything came into focus.
"What the..."
The trees that filled the scenery were nowhere in sight, in fact there was nothing, no trees, lakes, houses... just sand... as far as I could see. I motioned to open the window, but sensed the increasing heat on the glass and changed my mind.
Leaning against the glass, I tried checking the area we just passed through but couldn't see the tunnel exit nor any change in scenery up ahead. I could actually see heatwaves emanating from the ground like you'd see on a hot summer day... except we were at the end of winter, and at the forest stop you could barely go outside without a coat. In addition to this, I was pretty sure there were no deserts of any kind on the country.
I had to know more, so I risked opening the window and faced the hot air that barely allowed me to breathe.
Looking back, I could no longer see the tunnel entrance, just a small mountain which I assumed we had crossed. I looked ahead and noticed the track just went in a straight line, no change in scenery whatsoever.
The heat seemed to get stronger, so I closed the window and sat back down. The other side of the train was equally deserted. Desolate actually.
